100 Ideas for Small Signs

If you own a cutting machine you’ve maybe thought about creating some of your own home decor.
I know that when I purchased my first cutting machine, sign making was very high on my “To DO” list.
Even so, I owned the cutting machine, but didn’t always have the time. Can you relate?
Maybe it’s not time, but maybe it’s space, owning power tools or other reasons that keep you from making some cute home decor pieces of your own.
Don’t have time or space for big signs? No problem. There’s lots of great small signs within easy reach.
At the end of this post I’m going to share with you my hand-drawn Pumpkin Spice SVG freebie and a printable that has over 100 ideas for small signs.
Create Shelf Sitters or Tiered Tray Decor Signs
I like to use short phrases on a piece of 1″x 2″ and make shelf sitters. Do you have a tiered tray?
Wouldn’t it be neat to make your own decorations for these and change them seasonally? Do you like to make craft fair items?

This is just a list that I started and will update as time goes on. There are so many more small signs that you could make.
A small miter box or even a hand saw makes quick work out of cutting small wood pieces. Starting simple means you don’t need lots of fancy stuff to do it.
Save Time and Money
Small signs are a great for saving time and money. Why?
- Mainly text although think about adding hearts, snowflakes, flourishes and arrows to make them unique
- Simple wood cutting
- Less space needed
- No framing needed
- Less supplies needed
- Can be made with wood scraps
- Less clean-up

- Waverly Pumpkin Chalk Paint
- Piece of 1″ x 2″ lumber (or furring strips)

My 1″ x 2″ was cut at 9 inches long. You’ll want to cut your SVG design accordingly.
I resized my text to about 7 inches long and about 1 1/8 inches tall.
Creating a weeding box, in this case a rectangle the size of your sign helps with the placement of your stencil.
I recently started using make-up sponges for my sign painting projects and found them less expensive and easier to use than foam brushes.
Use light coats of paint to control paint bleeds, especially on your small signs.
I use the “Chalked” brand of Clear Matte Sealer for my signs. It’s readily available, dries quickly and protects your work so you can save it from year to year.
