Quick & Cute Fabric Baskets from Layer Cake Squares
If you’ve ever worked with a layer cake bundle, you know how quickly those extra 10″ squares can pile up in the sewing room. I didn’t have a traditional layer cake (usually a coordinated set from one fabric line), but I did have a bundle of 10″ squares I picked up on Amazon. After finishing a previous project, I still had quite a few of these pretty floral prints left over — perfect for trying out another small project.
When I spotted the How to Sew Easy Baskets with 10″ Squares – Layer Cake Leftover Project! free tutorial from Sew Can She, I knew it was exactly what I needed for a quick, satisfying make.
A Clever Use for Leftover Squares
The pattern from Sew Can She is so clever — you only need four 10″ squares for each basket, plus a little bit of interfacing or fusible fleece for stability. The original tutorial is very friendly, so I’m not going to share the instructions here — instead, you can find it right on the site:

A Fun Follow-Up Project
One thing I love about this make is that it uses fabric from the same bundle I worked with in an earlier project. In that tutorial I mentioned that I was on a mission to find projects that would use up these 10″ squares. The squares aren’t part of a perfectly coordinated pack, but a few of the prints still complement each other nicely. It’s a budget-friendly way to get a fresh, cheerful look without buying more fabric.
The Fun (and Slightly Tricky) Fabric Selection Process
The hardest part of this project was choosing which squares to use. Since my bundle wasn’t a coordinated set, I spent a little time spreading them out on my table, swapping prints in and out, and trying different combinations. I wanted the fabrics to look cute together without feeling too matchy-matchy. In the end, I just went with a few of my favorites — and I think that’s the best approach for a project like this. Here are the fabrics I picked for the first basket.
Why I’ll Make Them Again
- They’re fast-Believe me, these go together in no time.
- They used up fabric squares that I already had.
- They’re customizable-You can make them match any room, holiday, or theme.
- They’re handy-Use them as storage, or putting snippets in as you sew.
- They make fantastic last-minute gifts.
Wrapping It Up
I really enjoyed making these little fabric baskets and learning a new way to use 10″ squares. It’s a simple project with such a satisfying result, and I love finding creative ways to make the most of fabric I already have on hand.
