Monday Minute: Using Your Fresh Herbs

Fresh Herbs for Great Summer Flavor

If you live in the midwest, it’s the season to have an abundance of fresh herbs in your garden.

We typically grow sage, basil, dill, parsley, rosemary and  chives. These are wonderful additions to add a pop of flavor to some of our favorite foods.

For this Monday Minute I waned to share a quick and easy recipe for an herb cheese spread that I know you’ll love. You’ll be able to make this spread in literally a few minutes, and still have time for all your favorite summer activities and entertaining.

Chives

Chives are a perennial member of the Allium family which also includes garlic, shallots, leeks and onions. Although they have a mild onion flavor they have an aftertaste that doesn’t linger.

They are not only valuable for their wonderful flavor, but with their purple flowers, they also add an ornamental element to the herb garden.

Dill

Dill is another one of those herbs I wouldn’t want to be without. Dill is a biennial that tends to reseed itself pretty easily, so it’s pretty easy to grow. I used to make pickles, but with the kids pretty well grown, we don’t use as many as we used to.

I still love to have the dill. I use it for sauces made with sour cream or yogurt. It’s also a great addition to one of our favorite salmon recipes. Dill is also an amazing addition to those wonderful summer picnic sides, like potato salad.

Dill is one of the least fussy plants in the summer garden and I love the little yellow flowers and the amazing smell when I walk back to my garden.

A kitchen scissors is a handy tool for chopping up your fresh herbs. I like to gather my ingredients right before I make my cheese spread. And how can you resist a little escape to the garden?

I hope you enjoy using the herbs you have growing in your garden. If you aren’t growing any, consider the diversity they add to your kitchen garden. If you don’t have room, many herbs make great container plantings as well.

Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful day!
